GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under general supervision, this position performs difficult asphalt work involved in street paving, roadway openings and asphalt replacement. Reports to the Crew Supervisor C. There are two (2) levels of Asphalt Finisher distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs manual labor laying asphalt to patch and pave asphalt roadways according to Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) regulations;assists in setting up traffic control devices;uses a jackhammer to cut asphalt;removes soiled material from openings;tamps and compacts openings;shovels asphalt into asphalt hopper. Performs the street maintenance repairs;operates heavy equipment to include single axle and tandem dump trucks, patch trucks, front end loader with attachments, tar distributer, pulverizer, excavator, rollers, and truck with trailer;utilizes instruments to include air compressors, jack hammers, snow plows, sand and chip spreaders and hand and power tools. Ensures the safety of City equipment and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for and locating underground utility lines, sets out traffic cones and signs according the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and flags traffic for work performed. Works with other crews for cross training, routine maintenance, weather related emergencies, or to meet organizational demands. Completes required records, reports, forms and work orders. Performs other duties as assigned.
